A Little Help From the Mage

You walk through the city of Sunshire with a great deal of pace as the black book from the Mayor’s Mansion is in your pack. The citizens are stepping out of the way as you’re walking quickly to the local pub, because where else in all of Dun-I can you quickly find the person you’re looking for. Pubs are central locales for all adventurers and knowledgable folk. You open the door and look around, immediately placing your eyes on the man you are looking for.

“Well, look who it is,” announces Merevo as he walks toward you. “You look somewhat panicked. Is everything alright?”

You stand still and reach into your pack, pulling out the book and handing it to Merevo. He holds onto it, feeling some of the magic held within and smiles eagerly. “Come, let me buy you a drink.”

He motions for you to follow him to the table where his brother, Jerikko, was already sitting. Merevo motions for the barkeep to bring you a drink to calm your nerves while he places the book on the table. The barkeep brings you a beverage and places it in front of you while Jerikko turns and looks at you with an odd scorn. “Looks like you’ve seen a ghost,” he says with a sly grin.

Merevo opens the front cover of the book and starts looking at it closely, seeing the old text and bringing about a wry grin. “This book contains some very old knowledge,” explains Merevo while reaching to the side of the book and grabbing his mug. He sips on the ale before placing it back down and turning the page. “The text is very old and very ancient.”

“Can’t you read it, brother?” questions Jerikko sarcastically.

“I can read most of it, but why can’t you?” answers Merevo with an equally sarcastic tone.

“Brother, I only crave knowledge I can use. Everything you find in that dusty old book is useless” counters Jerikko as he pushes himself away from the table. “I’ll be upstairs taking a nap. Come get me when you find the whereabouts of another shard.”

Merevo chuckles lightly as Jerikko walks away, leaving you at the table with Merevo while he stares intently at the text. “He just doesn’t understand that sometimes it requires old knowledge to harness new powers,” quips Merevo as he continues to turn the pages. He pauses for a few moments before closing the book and looking at you directly with a smile plastered across his face. “I think we need to go investigate something together,” he says happily. “This book is telling me how several of the old Gods taught their followers to create portals that blocked the flow of souls to the dominion of Vesya. It appears as if this magic allowed the followers of a certain Deity to remain on Dun-I and serve their Gods for all of eternity.”

He pauses for a moment. “There were some notes written in the margins that says they used some magic to hide the plantation in the fields. I wonder if it’s still there.” Merevo pauses for a brief moment and sips from his ale while smirking. “How about we all go and find out?” Your curiosity spikes after listening to the young mage. Without any hesitation, you reach forward and grab your drink, turning it up and chugging the contents before slamming it back down on the table and motioning for Merevo to follow you.
