The Forgotten Fields

Merevo Joins the Party (NPCs act similar to enemies. Consult the rules for more information: Rules and Systems)

As you leave town, you gaze over the horizon. Ahead of you to the East is a road that will take you to the port city of Werz, though most travel by the Sariak River to get there. To the north, plains stretch for as far as the eyes can see with several small villages barely visible in the distance. You walk along the road and up to the entrance to the Sunshire Fields, the large plot of land owned by the city but worked by everyone, though a large portion of them are fallow. Merevo stops at the entrance and pulls out the dusty old tome, opening the cover softly and flipping through the pages. "This is rather perplexing," he stated curiously while peering at the pages. "There are directions here, but they are vague and coded. It is quite intriguing. He scratches his head before turning to look at you. "The book states that the key of the moon stands guard among the witch's garden, ready to illuminate the gates of Surress." Merevo pauses briefly while scratching his chin. He tilts his head down toward the ground and ponders the meaning while you look on at him patiently. "Witch grass is what was once grown in these fields, I believe," he reasons softly to himself with his arms folded. "Perhaps these fields are a good place to start our search."

You look up to see an old, wooden arch labeled, Sunshire Fields. You walk beneath it and into a thicket of tall, overgrown grass that comes up to your waist and crunches beneath your feet. The ground is firm, almost appearing like it hasn't been in use for years. As you wade through the tall grass, you scan ahead for any clues as to what you are searching for when you hear a deep growling, followed by a vicious snarl. "Odd," states a perplexed Merevo as he stops moving to look back at you. "I do hope that was your stomach."

You quickly scan your surrounding area to find patches of  grass moving wildly. You become painfully aware of multiple creatures moving in and surrounding you. Unable to tell what is hiding in the tall grass Merevo stands still and cracks his knuckles. “Well, whats an adventure without a little trouble,” he exclaims.

You turn quickly to find two Bandersnatches leap out of the grass and pounce toward you.

“Undead dogs?” questions Merevo as the two creatures fall to the ground. “I can definitely attest to not expecting that.”

Merevo looks around with you looking around, seeing more of the grass moving around you. Four more bandersnatches leap from the grass to attack you.

The four undead creatures collapse to the ground, but you look around to see more of the grass moving around you. Merevo looks out into the distance, seeing a large barn suddenly appear in the distance before vanishing. “There’s a magic concealing whatever is back there!” he announces while backing toward it. “Come on, we can’t keep fighting these beasts. We have to find out where this magic is coming from!”

He motions for you to follow him and run into the distance. The grass behind you is still swaying with the bandersnatches giving chase. The grass crunches underneath your feet as you break into a sprint, following Merevo who is running toward what he perceived to be a large, hidden structure. You pass Merevo as he stops briefly, his hands glowing white. He projects two large balls of white energy into the brush to attempt to slow down the bandersnatches.

You run out of the tall grass and into the clearing where Merevo told you to run. Merevo, with his hands still glowing white, runs from the tall grass and hurls a large white ball into the opening. A large flash appears and an old, brown barn appears where there wasn’t one. The wooden structure appears to be quite dated, though still standing. You turn around, seeing the charging Bandersnatches still giving pursuit. Four of them leap out of the grass as you back up toward the barn.

The four creatures stop moving as you slowly back up, still seeing the grass moving ahead of you. “Come on, I’m tired of ending these creatures.” You see a door in the barn and walk toward it, pushing it open to reveal an area that will provide a brief respite from the bandersnatches.

You walk into a very dimly lit, musty barn. The air hasn’t been stirred in this barn in ages and a thick, dirty grime covers the floor and the walls. The only illumination is coming from openings in the walls where splinters of wood are missing. Along the dirty walls, you notice several old pieces of farming equipment, such as pikes, shovels, and other rudimentary tilling devices. You examine the tools, noticing the rust and other wear on them. They haven’t been used in some time.

“Why was this place concealed?” asks Merevo as he walks in and looks around the room. You examine the walls with Merevo at your side. “There has to be something in this barn that is concealing the building. There has to be some reason for this.” You walk away from the walls and over to the center of the room. You look up to notice a small, blue light emanating from the center of the roof down to the floor. “That’s odd,” Merevo states as he walks up to you and glances up.

Merevo smirks at you while your eyes are glued on the light. His hand glows a faint white while he keeps his eyes locked on you. The aura projects a white light toward the blue light, hitting it in the center and erupting a blue spark throughout the room. A loud rumble comes from around the room as darkness creeps in. Merevo steps around you to the door and looks out into the fields. “I think I may need you all for a moment,” he mutters slowly. You walk over to the door to find four Bandersnatches poised to pounce with two very pale men wearing old, tattered clothes and carrying pitchforks standing beside them. “I think someone is upset that we found the barn,” announces Merevo sarcastically as he steps out of the barn and toward the creatures waiting for you.

Commence Battle with Bandersnatch x 4 and Dorveaux Farmhand x 2

The farmhands fall to the ground and disappear while the Bandersnatches run off into the field. “Odd,” mentions Merevo before turning to look back at you. With his back turned, a large, metal gate with an even larger and ornate double gate can be seen in the distance. You point toward the fence, prompting Merevo to turn around and smirk. “I see there’s more to this puzzle than meets the eye.” Merevo breathes slowly and tries to compose himself. "This whole mystery continues to grow before our eyes, adventurers." Merevo steps forward into the grass with you behind him, walking slowly through the tall grass toward the large iron gate.

You move through the large grass with Merevo ahead of you, wading through the waist high vegetation toward the large iron fence. You listen around you, hearing the scuffling of the grass potentially from more bandersnatches. The fence ahead of you flickers, showing signs of a magical energy trying to conceal it, much like the barn before it. "These beasts are still stirring," continues Merevo. "I wonder what they're protecting."

As you get closer to the fence, seeing the clearing in front of it only a few feet away, five of the beasts leap through the grass to pounce you. You run forward, reaching the clearing in front of the fence and turn around to defend yourself.

Commence Battle with Bandersnatch x 5

The Bandersnatches are all on the ground in front of you as you turn around to look at the tall fence. As you turn around, you see a large, blue light emitting from what appears to be the latch on the iron gate. Merevo, smirking at seeing the magic again, launches another small projectile at the blue light. The gate slams open in front of you, opening up a large area.

You stare at the open area as three small buildings appear in front of you and a very large mansion ahead of them. “So they were hiding an entire plantation,” announces a smiling Merevo as he stepped through the iron gate and looks around. “I think there is a lot more to this adventure than meets the eye.”
