The Hunt for Rattias

Advertisements

You walk into the Hunter’s Guild, hoping for a challenge to come for you. Various hunters are sitting around the very quiet guild hall with only small, whispering conversations happening. You walk past the tables and the trophies along the wall to reach the huntmaster who is still sitting at his table behind his large stack of parchment.

On the wall, you see a very fresh piece of parchment, one that has not been tacked to the wall for very long. You reach forward and grab it with a set of eyes staring at you. “Brave lad,” announces Prule as he looks at the parchment that’s in your hand. “I try to avoid heading to any city that houses a population that tends to look down their noses at us.”

“Don’t try and deter, Prule,” announces the huntmaster without looking up from his stack. “The people of Shorrek might be wound a little tight, but they are a good group of people and they pay very well.”

You look at the parchment and it is indeed in the city of Shorrek. Rattias, a large rat, has inflicted several of the magistrate with illness from eating the grain housed at the bakeries. 300 gold will be provided to any hunter who can kill the large rat that resides in the sewers of Shorrek. “This one might be right up your alley, friend,” continues Prule with a smirk. “I want nothing to do with the cobblestone streets of the seat of power.”

The huntmaster shakes his head as you turn and nod, heading straight for the door to the outside world. Gleefully, you make your way to Shorrek.

The Sewers of Shorrek

Upon accepting the hunt, you travel to the Kingdom of Shorrek, the seat of power in the Confederation of Small Kingdoms. The city is full of white buildings that reflect the sun that shines down and a cobblestone roads that deafen the sounds of the horse-drawn carriages. Men and women, mostly very well dressed and walking with an aura of importance about them, traverse the paths beside the streets to avoid the magnificently dressed steeds. The sounds of the hoofs hitting the streets fill the area with a soft noise that is accompanied by a ringing bell from the tower at the capital.

You walk through the streets and turn down an alley, looking for an entrance into the sewers and the undercroft of Shorrek. The alley is constructed of a different stone with wooden crates and boxes along both sides of the buildings. A wonderful smell comes before you as you walk past a large bakery; several bags of flour and other supplies are stacked by the back door. One of the bags, the one at the bottom of the stack, has a very large hole in it and is evidence that rats have gotten to it. You walk past the bakery and find the first iron grate in the ground that leads to the sewer. You pull back on the grate and set it to the side before dropping into the dark, smelly sewer beneath the streets of Shorrek.

In the sewer, the floor is somewhat slick. Around you are bricks that line the walls and the ceiling is constructed of a rough stone. Several grates, every few feet, offer light that is coming in from the streets and the buildings fortunate enough to have a personal opening. You hear the scurrying of small creatures in front of you. Light shines through the grates to show that several small rats are ravaging pieces of trash that has made its way into the sewers. You move toward them to inspect, hoping to find your mark, when they scurry. The light shines bright enough for you to get a decent look at them and your mark is not amongst the small group.

You continue through the sewer by following the linear path. A louder scurrying is coming from ahead of you, followed by a deep chirp. You turn your head as the path turns to the right. The light coming through the grates shimmers off of the fur of a much larger creature. You shift your body toward the creature and peer down the hallway. Large, beady eyes glisten off of the light and a large tail can be seen wading through the stream of sewage. Rattias, the creature you've been sent to slay, is in front of you.

Rattias turns toward you as you stare at him. With a loud hiss, he scurries toward you with his two large frontal fangs exposed. His short legs propel is large body and even larger tail toward you at a rapid speed, giving you only enough time to pull out your weapon before he attacks.

Commence Battle with Rattias

The large rat, bloodied and broken, collapses into the sewer ground. You sheathe your weapon as other rats look down the hallway. They keep their distance as you grab the extremely large rodent by his tail and head for the nearest grate. You push it up and toss Rattias onto the streets of Shorrek. You emerge in the center of one of the central cobblestone streets with aristocrats and oligarchs looking on in disgust. Several Shorrek soldiers run toward the grate as you pull yourself up onto the street. "You there! Stop!" shouts one of the soldiers as you raise your hands up to show that you are unarmed. You reach into the knapsack on your side and pull out the parchment that you received from the Hunter's Guild. The soldier snatches it from your hand and stares at it before glancing over to the deceased beast at your side. He hands you the parchment and nods. "Very well, hunter. We thank you for your service." The soldier stares at you for a moment before pulling a blue shard from his pocket. "Please, take this as a token of our gratitude and as an invitation to never return to fair streets to do this again."

Acquire One of the Following: Shard of the Runecaster, Shard of Enchanting, Shard of Penance, Shard of Time, Shard of Insanity

The shard glows in your hand as you stare at it. The guard may have viewed this as a common trinket, but you are able to feel the knowledge and power of the Gods flowing through it. You look around to see the citizens of Shorrek taken aback by the sight of the large rat that has been plaguing their grain supply. You smile before reaching down and grabbing the tail of the massive creature, picking him up to hoist him over his shoulder and carry him away.
