The Moonlit Trail

The Moonlit Trail

You walk away from the encampment, leaving Barddaz to contemplate the tongue lashing he received from Zilara on patience and power. With your new shard and equipment, you traipse into the dense brush that surrounded the large fire and small tents to find yourself quickly in a cold, quiet place. The thicket around you is muffling all of the noise, though the sounds of small serpents and woodland creatures scurrying at your feet are still audible. You breathe slowly, looking ahead as the warm breath creates a grey mist from your mouth. The night is quite cold, though you are well equipped to avoid any sickness from the exposure to the elements.

In front of you, the path is well worn but covered with fallen leaves. The two moons of Dun-I illuminate your path. You’re able to make out the direction without much fuss and are able to continue marching toward your destination. The sounds of the cracking leaves beneath your feet echo around you with each firm step. The weapons on your back rattle with your movement, preventing you from moving with a sense of stealth.

You continue along for several minutes, breathing heavily from the increased weight on your body. Though you’re accustomed to carrying stones in the quarry, you have never experienced moving in the dead of night with weapons and armor equipped. After a few more steps, you stop for a moment and rest your hands on your knees, bending over at the waist in an attempt to catch your breath. While exhaling, you hear the sounds of scuffling leaves behind you, prompting you to turn quickly. Standing behind you, ready to strike, is a small pack of wolves growling and snarling. You reach for your weapon as the wolves lunge forward to strike.

Commence Battle with Wolf x 3

The three wolves drop to the ground with their blood pooling around them. You stagger backwards, surprised at what you have done and the power you now possess. You look out at the weapon in your hand as you blink slowly and breathe heavily. You plant your feet firmly on the ground and stand up tall, clutching your weapon in your hand while trying to exhibit confidence. Where in the previous morning, you were a slave toiling away in the quarry, now you are a warrior possessing a raw power that few could possess. You survived an invasion and now, you are on your way to repel it and send it back to Loccaris.

You turn your head to look back down the path, ready to move on toward your destination. As you turn to face it, three more wolves are standing before you, primed and ready to strike as the last did. You smirk and grip your weapon tightly, knowing that these three wolves will meet a similar fate.

Commence Battle with Wolf x 3

The three wolves meet an identical fate to the ones before them. You breathe heavily, though proudly as the warm air from your mouth fills up the area in front of you. As you continue to stand in one spot, holding onto your weapon while inspecting the area for more wolves, you hear a loud crash in the distance behind you. You turn abruptly toward the crash to see a large, purple fire in the distance bouncing with three of the demonic creatures moving with it. Your eyes widen as the large flame grows as the creature holding it moves toward you. The creature screams loudly, prompting you to stumble backwards and grab your weapons. You look at the small garrison as they run toward you, leaving you with only two options. Charge toward them and attack or flee toward your destination. What will you do?

Attack the Demons

Flee from the Demons

Attack

You feel the power of the shards and the knowledge of the Gods coursing through your veins as you grip your weapon tightly. You grimace as the creatures move toward you, scowling as you brace for the incoming battle. They demons come into focus and they’re identical to the ones that you saw in the quarry: dark, hardened skin with spikes protruding from their elbows  and knees. Behind their backs, the large demons carried either scythes or greatswords, while you notice some on the back are carrying large bows. They get into range and draw their weapons, preparing to lunge forward to skewer you where you stand.

Commence Battle with Lesser Demon x 2

Two of the demons fall at your feet with several more coming behind them. You look down and notice the two weapons that the demons were carrying are superior to the ones you possess.

Acquire: Copper Scythe

Acquire: Copper Greatsword

The scythe and greatsword are both constructed of copper and are made of a very durable material. The blades are sharp and can potentially slice through the flesh of a mortal in a single swipe. You place them behind your back to look forward, noticing the oncoming forces charging in. Seeing the vast number of forces, you feel it is best to not stand your ground, but to flee toward the encampment.

You turn and take off in a sprint, stirring up the leaves and the dirt beneath your feet. The cold wind pushes against your face as you sprint down the leaf covered path. You look over your shoulder, noticing that the demons are faster than you are and are catching up to you. What started as several feet has only turned into a few. You hear the grunts from the demons as they get closer to you. You look over to see the closet demon raising his scythe, preparing to strike you down while in motion.

“Drop!” screams a voice in front of you. You hit the ground, landing on your stomach as a large axe flies through the air and embeds itself in the face of the closest demon. You roll over onto your back to see the closest demon drop to his knees. A tall man runs up behind you and reaches for his axe, removing it from the face of the demon while slicing his throat with another axe. The freshly decapitated demon falls to his side while the man with two axes stands between you and the rest of the demons. “Get ready to sprint to the lake,” he said calmly while seething. “These bastards don’t know what’s about to hit them. The Tidecaller has a surprise for them.”

You look confused as you get up to your feet. The demons move closer, slowing down slightly at the sight of their ally. “Get ready,” says the man in between you and the demons, who move closer to you. “Now!” he screams as he turns and runs past you. Without hesitation, you take off behind the man and follow him down the path. The wind is again pushing against your face as you look ahead, noticing a large clearing in front of you. “When I say dive, you have to dive to the side else you’re gonna get really wet!” announced the man in front of you. You run for several more feet before seeing a large body of water in front of you. “Dive!” he screams as you enter the clearing, prompting you to dive to the side as a large wave crash into the oncoming demons. Behind the wave, a small woman in a blue tunic is standing with her hands up, conjuring and controlling the waves that have crashed into forcefully into the demons. “Fantastic work, Shyterria!” screams the man who led you out of the path and into the clearing. “We may win the night yet!”

“Don’t celebrate too quickly, Mykel,” she replies while manipulating the water around her. “These creatures are far more ruthless and resilient than you give them credit for!”

Mykel turns and looks at you with a sly grin before pulling himself up to his feet. He grips his axes as Shyterria continues to manipulate the waves around you. The moons are casting down a light onto the open area and you’re finally able to get a good look at Mykel. He is very muscular with short, neatly cropped hair and exposed arms. He wears a green vest with dark pants, though both possess tears and other marks of extreme wear. Water crashes into the various demons as Mykel charges toward the stunned demons that Shyterria did not finish with her awesome might. Behind her, several other human soldiers, allies of both Shyterria and Mykel, charged toward the demons and entered the fight.

The humans, many of them with the same insignia on their armor, crashed into the stunned and wet demons while Shyterria lowered the waves. Behind her, a blonde man wearing silver armor with red trim walked out, carrying his shield on his left hand and a long sword in his right. His long blonde hair waved with the flow of the wind around as the sound of clashing steel echoed through the area. The man behind Shyterria walks in front of her keeping his sword pointed down at the ground while moving with a sense of arrogant purpose. His shield, silver with red accents and a bright red shard in the center of it, pulsates white with every step. His sword, sharp on both ends with a very fine point, also glows white with each step. In front of him, one of the demons steps forward with his scythe drawn. The demon roars as he brings his weapon up above his head. However, before bringing it down, the blonde haired man lunges forward and swipes at the demon’s torso, nicking it with the tip of his blade and causing a dark purple blood to flow from the wound. Seconds passed and a white aura appeared around the cut, followed by the demon’s entire body. The demon fades into the air in a flash of light as the blonde haired man stands tall and proud, turning to look at you in disgust. “Are you just going to stand there?” he asks rudely while looking down on you.

Upon hearing his words, you turn and face the oncoming demons. You grip your weapons tightly as arrows come flying through the air toward you. One of the arrows whizzes past your head while another lands at your feet. However, another arrow lands in the center of your chest, embedding itself firmly in your sternum. You look down at the black arrow that’s sticking out of the center of your chest with blood pooling around it. In shock, you fall to your knees with your eyes still locked on the mortal wound. Your eyes become hazy as a light fills them. Within a few short moments, which feel like an eternity, you fall over to your side unconscious.
