You’ve got questions? We’ve got answers.

Can I play By Gods and Kings by myself?

Yes, you will just need to control multiple characters. The scenarios are built for parties of 4 and up, so you'll just need to control an entire party, but you are still able to play the game on your own.

How many Shards can I have equipped at one time?

3. No more or you will break the cycle and cause chaos to erupt.

How many Shards can I possess at one time?

A player can possess an unlimited number of Shards, though you can only equip 3 Shards at a time.

How many cards can I have in my hand?

The maximum is 5. If a player starts their turn with 5 cards, they can not draw another until they play a card.

How many cards can I have in the field?

A player can have a maximum of 3 cards in their field. If a fourth card enters the field, another card must be removed.

Can my tank equip a bow?

By Gods and Kings does not have "tanks," because players can interchange shards and gear between battles. You are not locked into a single job. So if you want to use a Shielding Shard and wield a bow, go for it! You do you.

Delli stands tall and proud while gazing out at the battlefield. His heavy armor is riddled with scuffs and scrapes, but he is the champion of the day. However, his allies are still skeptical of his tactical acumen. While he chooses to protect himself with the thickest of armor and his resolve and ability are unquestioned, the use of the bow as his weapon still draws puzzled looks from everyone who travels with him. "It works," Delli remarks before stepping away from his allies to search the field for his arrows.

"It does that," replies Alexis. "How though? That is what I ponder."

Can I Role Play?

I don't know, can you?

The short answer is yes, you most certainly are allowed to role play. The Scenarios in By Gods and Kings are designed to offer players choices to progress versus having open-ended, sandbox dungeons. By Gods and Kings is about narrative and telling a story, so role playing and becoming fully immersed in the story is welcomed.

How many items can I carry?

We do not have a limit on items, armor, or weapons currently. As long as you have hands, you can carry however much you want.

Is there money or gold involved in the game? How do I use it?

Yes. By Gods and Kings does use a currency called Deni. You use it to purchase weapons, armor, and items while outside of a scenario. Transactions are handled by the Game Master.

Can I suggest new characters for you to add to the stories?

Absolutely! We would love to hear what ideas you have for character builds and models.

Can I suggest new stories and scenarios?

Can equipment be shared with other players?

Yes! Equipment can be shared between all characters.

Can I pay you in Beets?

By Gods and Kings is Free to Play, so you don't have to pay us in beets...unless you just really want to. Beets are quite tasty and full of fiber. We will never turn them down.

Will any deck of cards work?

Any standard deck of playing cards will work.

I don't understand Alex. How can I attack an enemy with an S Word?

Who invited Sean Connery?

How do I choose my job?

By Gods and Kings does not have jobs. Instead, we have shards that have a certain class. Players are encouraged to mix and match shards, creating a versatile character that fits your imagination. A player is not bound to their choices at creation and can mold their character as the game goes on.

If you need help with ideas, please feel free to visit our Class Template section.

How exactly do Elemental Shards work?

Elemental Shards are one of the more complex items in the game. However, here is a very easy way to understand it.

Player A is using the Shard of Fire and has 2 10's currently in the field. Player B is using the Shard of Earth and has 2 8's currently in the field. Player A goes first and plays a 10, opting for it to be a basic attack instead of deploying the 3 of a Kind ability. She's "Holding her ability." Player B then goes and plays an 8 in his field, also giving him a 3 of a kind.

Because Player A held her ability but has 3 10's in her field and because player B now also has a 3 of a Kind, Elemental Synchronization can happen. The Ability, Volcanic Eruption goes off, dealing a boat load of damage. Both Player A's and Player B's fields are discarded.

Is there a Game Master/Dungeon Master?

By Gods and Kings does have a Game Master, but it's a hands off role. Think of them as less of a Master, controlling all aspects of the game, and more like the Banker in Monopoly. They're  an administrator of goods and services.

However, in home brewed and custom content, it is prudent to have a game master.

Can the Game Master play as well?

The Game Master is encouraged to play along with the other adventurers!

Do you level up in this game?

Only Shards level up. Players do not. At the conclusion of a scenario, experience points are given for your Shards so that they can level up.

What's Dun-I? I want to know more about this world.

Funny you should ask that...

The Story So Far

How many players can play?

How many friends do you have?

That many.

You can play with as many players as you want, but By Gods and Kings is recommended for a group of 2 to 6 players.

Can I make my own scenarios?

Home Brewing is allowed and encouraged! If you create a really amazing scenario, we'd love to see what you came up with.

How did you come up with this game?

It all started one day over a glass of bourbon...it was a Tuesday.

In all honesty, it all began as a story. An epic story, at that. Combining a love for writing with a love of gaming, it just made sense to turn this large, expanding narrative into something that people could play through.

Can I have more than one of the same Shard?

No. Only one Shard of a certain name can exist in the game.

How often can I change Shards and equipment?

After every encounter, you can change your equipment and shards as well as perform discard and sacrifice moves involving the current cards in your hand and the current cards in the field.

What happens if another member of my party has the same speed as I do?

In this situation, you and your ally would have to decide the order in which you would move. However, this can be decided on a round by round basis, so you are not locked into any decisions.

What if I don't want to deploy an ability, even though what I'm going to play will make a hand?

You have the option of holding your field and not deploying an ability if you choose.

How long can I hold before using an ability.

You can hold for one turn.

Can I use abilities off of multiple shards simultaneously?

In the event that multiple abilities activate on the same turn (flush + either straight of 3 of a kind), you may use the abilities off of multiple shards. You are not confined to only using one.

You cannot, however, use multiple shards for one ability. If a flush ability activates, you can't activate that ability from all equipped shards. You can only activate it on one.

How does Trance work?

If you're using the Shard of the Harvest and you have the equip bonus, Trance, it will apply your magical bonus on anyone who follows you with using an ability, so long as it's done on the same target and activated in the same way and before your next turn.

Reina looks over at her ally, Jackson, noticing that he is poised to strike. She gazes over at his hand and his field, knowing that the two of them will be able to do something remarkably powerful. She plays a four of diamonds into her field, deploying her flush ability and setting up Jackson to do the same. On Jackson's turn, he plays a King of Clubs, deploying his Flush maneuver. Reina adds her magical bonus to his total score, dealing more damage to their foe.

How does Finishing Blow work?

If you're using the Shard of Executions, and you have the ability "Finishing Blow" equipped, you will double your physical bonus on the next physical ability that matches the ability that you are using.

With the Shard of Executions equipped, Debbie is poised to finish any and all enemies that come across her path. Daniel moves first, playing an Ace of Spades into the field and deploying his Three of a Kind ability. Debbie, smirking with happiness, looks down at her field to see two 7s sitting there with another in her hand. On her turn, she lays down the 7 and doubles her physical bonus onto her ability.

Can I opt to not make a save and just take the effect?

Yes. If you don't want to lose a card in your field to make a safe, you have the right to take the damage or effect instead.
